Vote for other here: I vote for an aquarium fort: Flood the world, with glass windows looking out into the water. Being near the ocean is a plus; otherwise a river will do.
However, since I'm already playing a game somewhat like this, I'll also throw my vote behind anything else.

For those curious about the Obelisk goal:
The way it's generally done is to dig an enormous hole in the ground along with a matching hollow tower straddled above. A single Z-level of magma is then poured inside followed by just enough water to turn the layer into obsidian. Rise and repeat until the entire structure is completely filled then tear down the scaffold and start mining out your fortress inside.

Catsplosion for food + killing machine + piss off everything (especially the mountainhome) + glowing pit + SURVIVAL.
All in a glacier, desert, carp infested river, or random haunted zone.

It's a bit late, but I've always wanted to try a Hermit Superstructure. Too bad Hermit is nigh-impossible since your one remaining dwarf will become miserable after his friends die, and likely go insane shortly later.

I'm not familiar with the concept, but it sounds like all you have to do is isolate a dwarf so he never makes any friends in the first place.

Hermit is where you start with all unskilled dwarves, and the only item you bring along is a pick. You then kill off all immigrants and six of your seven dwarves. The main issue with this is that you starting dwarves will almost always start off as friends with two or three other starting dwarves, which is enough to make the hermit dwarf miserable when he dies. I'm not sure if it's even possible to start off with a dwarf who isn't friends with anybody. Aside from that, it's actually pretty easy, assuming you don't start off in an area that has too many threatening creatures. Gather herbs, make a small farm. Use wood from your wagon to make a bed. Anything else isn't necessary, and you can basically do whatever you want. Too bad your hermit will almost always go berserk within a few hours of his friends dying.

Ahh, the way I've seen it played is that you bring nothing (no pick), use the wood from the wagon to build a trade depot, and trade away anything you can gather up quickly (maybe even rock crafts if you can construct a workshop quickly enough) to get your first pick/axe, and go from there. Complete survivalist dorf...
