Never have stockpiles for common stone types. You're better off just digging a hole above your workshops and designating it as a garbage dump. That way you can direct all your dorfs to toss the useless waste in a pile together. Once that's done you can reclaim stone as needed.

Or for just specific stones: hit "k", scroll over to the pile, select you stone and hit "f" to reclaim.

1-tile internal refuse pile sealed behind double/triple doors will contain all the miasma from rotting parts (or dwarves..), be a convenient place to dump caged sieger's gear, function as a quantum stone-pile, and allows your butcher's to keep on butchering even when the fort's in lock-down.
Leaving walls up around the 3x3 space that holds each kitchen-type room, with a single door, will VASTLY help towards containing the early-miasma from easily distracted butchers.
Raw materials stockpile -> workshop -> finished goods stockpile makes for a nice workflow.
Building a special alcove just inside your front drawbridge for your guard dogs to stay inside means they generally won't get shot up by crossbow-goblins.
Statue-parties are DOOM!

I actually had a terminal party once. I only had about 15 dwarves at the time. They would all party, then take a break, then eat and drink, then sleep, and then party some more. This went on and on until all they were doing was partying, breaking, and sleeping, because I ran out of food and drink. Of course, they were also going outside to drink, where they were promptly struck down by carp.

Hm. Phrost, how did you get such precise counts of everything in the fortress? In my current fortress, all my stocks have (?) next to them, even though I have every noble's demands satisfied.

Go to the record keeper Noble position, press "s"ettings to change the desired accuracy level. Higher accuracy = longer time time the record keeper spends in their office keeping records. I tried to offset this by starting with a semi-decent record keeper.

May or may not be relevant to the current discussion: Boulders block caravan travel, so if the 3-wide path outside entrance to the fort has boulders in it, caravans can't enter.
Also, soldiers can't go outside if you use the orders menu to order "all dwarfs inside" vs "soldiers can go outside".

Shift D is your friend for caravan paths. Roads come in handy as well.

Shift D is your friend for caravan paths. Roads come in handy as well. Floors are nice, as well, and they get rid of more stone (and, at least with the Mayday tiles, don't look as bad)

On the topic of mayday tiles, is it just me or do granite doors now show up completely black?

Shows up as completely black with white upper edges for me. I had been hoping that granite floors would be pure black, but no such luck. Had to settle for bare rhyolite floors instead.

Oh, fun fact, levers will now toggle states rather than opening/closing all. What this means is you can now have a lever that when pulled will open one floodgate and close another.
This makes my deadman's switch a lot easier to design.
